Fox Moon (Lisičja luna) is not only a show about growing up, but also a call to self-awareness, environmental consciousness, and the importance of choosing a sustainable future
The youth opera Fox Moon, suitable for children aged 9 and above, delights both the young and the young at heart. In 50 minutes, it takes us into the mysterious Evergreen Forest, filled with children turning into animals. Among them is thirteen-year-old Zoja, who, on a moonlit night, climbs a tree to save her cat and plunges into the depths. Before she falls, a horned black bird intercepts her and carries her above the treetops, deep into the mysterious Evergreen Forest. There begins her magical journey, where she will face the challenges of growing up and discovering her own identity.
Based on the book by Maša Ogrizek, with music by Matej Bonin, and choreographed by Ana Pandur, who also authored the concept and libretto, the story explores courage, friendship, and those moments when one must step into the unknown.
A co-production of Cankarjev dom, Glasbena matica Ljubljana, PKD Flamenko, and Zavod Koda:Manifest, the performance combines elements of music, movement, and improvisation, touching upon the contrasts between growing up and saying goodbye, confinement and liberation. Key themes of coming of age are explored through youth vocals and movement, accompanied by four professional percussionists who co-exist on stage throughout, bringing the narrative's central themes to life. The young protagonists face various struggles—such as abandonment, jealousy, and troubled family relationships—making crucial life choices that guide them toward independence. These heavy, serious topics are treated delicately through a fairytale approach, archetypal characters, and a depiction of nature as healing and safe.
Alongside the soloists, young singers from the Glasbena matica Ljubljana Youth Choir, under the direction of choir conductor Irma Močnik, take the stage to conjure the magical pulse of the forest with their voices, while four percussionists create the sonic world of nature and the mysteries of the moon.
