The Slowind Wind Quintet was founded in 1994 and has become Slovenia's most active new music ensemble. In addition to performing virtually the entire standard wind quintet repertoire, Slowind members have built a reputation as uncompromising performers of contemporary music, ranging from avant-garde classics to works by the youngest composers. Slowind actively commissions new works from Slovenian composers and regularly receives invitations to perform new compositions on European stages. Simultaneously, the quintet has maintained close collaborations with established international composers such as Vinko Globokar, Robert Aitken, Heinz Holliger, Jürg Wyttenbach, Vito Žuraj, Ivan Fedele, Toshio Hosokawa, Uroš Rojko, Martin Smolka, Volker Staub, Ivo Nilsson, Gérard Buquet, Niels Rosing-Schow, Nina Šenk, and others. These composers have dedicated works to Slowind and included the ensemble in their own projects. Slowind is a frequent guest at prestigious venues for contemporary music, including Ars Musica Brussels, Biennale Bern, Klangspuren Innsbruck, the New Music Concert Series Toronto, Contempuls Prague, Théâtre Dunois Paris, the Venice Biennale, the Zagreb Music Biennale, the festival Ars Nova of the SWR Stuttgart radio station, and the Takefu International Music Festival (Japan). Domestically, Slowind has increased its activities in the field of Slovenian music by organizing the annual Slowind Spring festival. While autumn remains dedicated to the Slowind Festival, the spring festival has been enriched by contributions from eminent artists such as Heinz Holliger, Robert Aitken, Alexander Lonquich, Arvid Engegård, Aleksandar Madžar, Mate Bekavac, Steven Davislim, Christiane Iven, Matthias Pintscher, Matthias Würsch, Naoko Yoshino, and Mayumi Miyata. Beyond its own performances, Slowind has been instrumental in promoting international contemporary chamber music repertoire and presenting lesser-known giants of 20th-century music in Slovenia. The ensemble's efforts have attracted participation from foreign contemporary music ensembles, as well as members of Slovenian symphony orchestras and established chamber groups and choirs.
Slowind's concerts are regularly recorded and broadcast by Radio Slovenia and foreign radio stations such as BBC 3 and Dutch Radio.
