Matej Bonin, born in 1986 in Koper, graduated in composition at the Music Academy of Ljubljana under the mentorship of Prof. Uroš Rojko and at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz, where he was studying music theater - composition in the class of Prof. Beat Furrer. His music studies abroad were supported by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Slovenia. He is currently teaching solfeggio as an assistant at the Music Academy of Ljubljana and at the Gymnasium Koper (solfeggio and harmony). For his work he was awarded the Prešeren Prize of the University of Ljubljana in 2008, and according to composer and conductor Peter Eötvös' recommendation he won the Gargonza Arts Award 2014. His orchestral piece “Cancro” was awarded first prize in the category “under 30” at the 62nd International Rostrum of Composers (IRC). His works have been performed in numerous festivals and venues abroad (Musica Viva Festival, Warsaw Autumn, Alte Oper Frankfurt, Gare du Nord Basel, Contemporary Art Cafe Budapest, The Firehouse Space New York, Cankar Hall, Slowind festival, Slovenian Music Days, Kino Šiška, Biennale for contemporary music Koper, Festine, …). His work work was presented at EXPO Milano 2015 as part of 50 selected finalists of a composition competition “Feeding Music-Music for EXPO 2015”. He collaborates with renowned international soloists and ensembles (Ensemble Modern, RTV Simphony Orchestra, violist Megumi Kasakawa, hornist Saar Berger, accordionist Luka Juhart, singer Irena Tomažin, Savasa Trio, Percussion duo Drumartica, Slowind quintet, neuverBand, ensemble MD7, and many others). Important part of his creative interest lies in collaborating with dance choreographers (Mirjam Klebel, Irena Tomažin, Tomaž Simatović). The result of these collaborations are also three dance performances to which he contributed music: Islands in the fog (2010) Paradise on stage (2014) and Body of the Voice (2015).
